How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata dance in Singapore?
A few years back I participated in an international event held at my school, and they turned our sports hall into a mini dance club for the opening night. ‘Shape of you’ by Ed Sheeren came on, and two random strangers started dancing salsa in the middle of the crowd. It was a really fun scene that has since stuck in my mind, so I decided to try Salsa class and Bachata class when COVID hit and I found myself with more free time.
What is your favourite dance class and why?
I like both but Bachata class is the one that really got me into it - largely because I really like Bachata music! I started with solo classes and decided to take up the Partner class as well early this year - it’s a different but also very fun experience!
What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa and Bachata?
It’s expressive, you get to lose yourself to the music while at the same time it forces you to be present in the moment - which I think is great given the world of distractions we now live in. There is also a very social aspect to dancing, and I’ve made several friends from lessons! The community is definitely a factor that draws me back.
What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa and Bachata?
It’s really good fun to be able to just move with the music! Even if you don’t think you can dance, being able to try something new and learn something that you’ve not naturally associated yourself with can also be pretty liberating.
It can definitely feel daunting to start learning dance as an adult, but I love the fun and welcoming environment which Caliente Dance Studio has created for beginner dancers, where there is no pressure and they really teach you from the basics.
Which Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?
I think my Spotify playlist speaks for itself - Within half a year of starting lessons, Bachata made it to the top #3 genre on my SpotifyWrapped2021, with Paris by Pinto Picasso as one of my top 5 most played songs.
