How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata?
I picked Salsa up socially when I was living in London - I walked into a bar (RIP pre-covid era), saw people taking informal classes and joined in. I fell in love with the music and culture around it but wanted to improve my technique so I began classes in Singapore! I’ve just started picking up a bit of bachata at social practicas and I’m hoping to take classes for this too.
What’s your favorite dance class so far and why?
I love the Salsa partner classes! The teachers are very patient and make sure we’re getting our stepping and spin technique right. I really appreciate the attention to detail because when my fundamentals are solid I find that I can follow (with effort 😅) dancers who are much more advanced than me which makes practicas extra fun!
What do you enjoy the most from Dancing?
I spend most of my day at my laptop and using the very quantitative parts of my brain, I love that dancing gives my day balance, allows me to explore my creative side and self expression. When the music starts playing, you might be singing or improvising with your partner but the last thing on your mind is your to do list, work, the pandemic (!) etc. 😂 Dancing is when I feel most present and it’s great to share that space with someone through partner work.
What reasons would you give to someone to start learning Dancing?
Dancing will help you move confidently in the body you’re in, provide you discipline, a release and as an added bonus keep you healthy 💃🏻 You’ll find the little things change - your walk, your attentiveness to body language, your posture and how you hear music. It’s something which for a couple hours of effort per week will add a lot more colour to your life in so many different ways and you’ll probably end up hooked like the rest of us!
