How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata dance in Singapore?
After two years of lockdown, I decided that I needed to try some new activity to get my anti-social introverted ass out of the house and socialise. Having realised that I have not tried dancing on the Classpass app, I narrowed down to three options: 1) Salsa 2) Ballet 3) Pole Dancing. Salsa was the most obvious option for me - fast forward to today, I am getting my ass to me in the level 4 class.
What is your favourite dance class and why?
Maybe not the favourite but most memorable would be Salsa partner class level 3. This was when the class started to feel more challenging for me but at the same time we started to learn some substantial moves that can be applied during social. It brought me great satisfaction when I was able to execute some of these moves during social dance nights.
What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa and Bachata?
The runner's high. I run quite fair bit and can usually achieve a runner's high after 20 - 45 minutes of continuous running. I am not sure if it is the blend of sexy salsa music and dancing, but I dare say a similar sense of euphoria can be achieved in 5 minutes of dancing. The unchoreographed non-verbal communication. It always amazes me how during a partner dance that there is an ongoing non-verbal conversation that is happening between lead and follow during each move. Being able to partake in such a conversation motivates me to advance my skills.
What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa and Bachata?
There are plenty of reasons:
1) A fun form of cardio - It is enjoyable to dance to Latin music
2) Great place to meet new people - Dancing is after all a social activity
3) Affordable - It is just a price of 2 Starbucks coffee ($9.90) for a trial class
Which Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?
I enjoy most of the Salsa songs played during social but the one stuck in my head right now is Mala by Marc Anthony
