How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata in Singapore?
As we have all experienced, 2020 is the year of the outbreak of the global pandemic. During this period, I have also struggled with a divorce. It has been a turmoil, and I went through some minor physical and psychological problems. At that point in time, I felt my life has fallen to the bottom.
However, with the support of my close friends, when the Circuit Breaker was over, I decided to completely change my state of mind and try something new to make myself happy again.
I happened to chance upon Caliente Dance Studio Singapore on the Internet, and I came for a trial class and found that being here really makes me very happy. I fell in love with it instantly. As a musician and music teacher, I have always enjoyed the rhythm of Latin music and Spanish songs, and I believe that music and dance have unique healing effects for the soul. So from September 2020 till today, I have participated in all the courses I can study in Caliente Dance Studio.
What is your favorite dance class and why?
I think it is the performance class, because it combines everything that we have learned in group dance classes (Solo Shines and Partner dance) to showcase a different culture; even if we are not professional dancers. I enjoy both Salsa and Bachata. They evoke completely different feelings. As a music teacher, I am more sensitive to rhythm and it brings me great excitement to experience Latin music.
What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa and Bachata?
I believe it can relieve stress and also make new friends in the process. It helps that you don’t have to think about the troubles in life, and it's an escape from daily the norms and the noise from the crowd. It is also a whole new way of expressing yourself beyond words.
What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa and Bachata?
If you feel mentally or psychologically stressed, if you need the same special exercise, or if you feel the lack of love and joy in your life, or need new friends (regardless of gender), believe me and come try it. But its better to come to Caliente Dance Studio, haha.
Which Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?
I am unable to recall the name, but they were the two songs from my first Salsa and Bachata performance. It is because I have always listened to them and as a result, they have been deeply etched in my heart.
Editor's note: Salsa - Abre Que Voy by Los Van Van, Bachata - El Canto de la Sirena by Dama
