Caliente Salsa and Bachata Student Spotlight - Dustin

Today, let us introduce to you one of our Bachata partner dancer! 😍

Meet Dustin 😎

How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata in Singapore?

My parents love to dance, and I have fond memories of dancing with them in the kitchen as a child. One of my favorite family videos is me dancing with my mom to Gloria Estefan as a 4-year-old.

I did a little bit of hip hop/modern dancing in high school which I really enjoyed, and I once won a tourist dance-off at a resort in Mexico, haha.

When I saw the Caliente Dance Studio on Instagram, I thought it would be a fun way to get back into it, especially since I really miss dancing at bars or to live music right now. I am glad I did!

What is your favorite dance class and why?

I’m currently in Partner Bachata level 3 with my girlfriend, Emily, and it’s great! It was really helpful doing the beginner and improver classes first to learn the basics. I like learning more at each level and advancing more and more each class. The first class is always a little daunting, but the teachers are great at showing me the steps along the way.

What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa and Bachata?

I generally enjoy meeting new people, being active, and challenging myself, and dance ticks all the boxes! It helps that we are all at similar levels and learning together. Going through things together creates a certain bond. My biggest challenge is leading, trying to think ahead of the next steps and move my body at the same time!

What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa and Bachata?

There’s a lot of misconceptions about dancing, but it is such a fun way to stay active and connect with others. Or as Kurt Vonnegut said: “Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.”

Which Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?

Though technically not a bachata song, I had a blast dancing to “That’s what I like” by Bruno Mars (Bachata remix version).

Runner up is DJ Snake - Loco Contigo (DJ Andrea Sinaguglia Bachata Remix)
