How did you get into learning Salsa and Bachata dance in Singapore?

I’ve always been intrigued by the flow and style of latin dances. I have watched dance videos online for years and have a pretty big Spotify playlist as well but somehow just never took the next step to try it for myself until Caliente Dance Studio. Coming out of lockdown, I was really into getting myself out of my comfort zone and trying out activities that I always held myself back from. A casual conversation with a friend led to us signing up for a bachata partner dance trial class together and the rest is history! Went on to sign up for more bachata classes and salsa classes as well after that.

What is your favourite dance class and why?

I really enjoy the partner dance classes for both salsa and bachata! It’s a good mix where Salsa dance is a bit faster and more energetic, and Bachata dance is slower and more sensual. There’s always some new variation to learn in each class.

What do you enjoy the most about dancing Salsa and Bachata?

The freedom to express yourself and the lack of judgement! Everyone’s there to learn too and it was so reassuring in my early classes to feel this as I remember being so nervous when I was first starting out. Going for socials used to terrify me but now it’s become something I look forward to whenever I have the time. The boost of confidence you get when the steps start feeling easier and more natural is huge motivation too.

What reasons will you give to someone to start learning how to dance Salsa and Bachata?

Never be afraid to try new things! People are extremely welcoming and helpful when you’re just starting out so you will never feel out of place. You may even end up developing a love for it as we all did! It is a much more fun way to get some exercise and let loose and relax after a busy work week. You get to pick up a new skill, feel more comfortable in your own skin and meet like minded people along the way.

Which Salsa or Bachata song do you like the most?

At the moment, it would probably be Bésame – Dani J, Sanco, Dj Husky
